Technical Alignment with New National Standard | GB/T 12232-2025 Enters Into Force, Gaote Holding Builds Flanged Iron Gate Valve Portfolio Through Standardized Manufacturing
Recently, GB/T 12232-2025 General Purpose Industrial Valves – Flanged Iron Gate Valves was officially released and will take effect on May 1, 2026, replacing the 2005 version. As one of the drafting units of this standard, Gaote Holding Group has been deeply involved in the discussion, verification and formulation of its technical clauses, integrating years of manufacturing experience and on-site engineering requirements into the specification to drive the refinement, quantification and practical implementation of the design, production and inspection system for flanged iron gate valves in the industry.
The new standard covers gray cast iron and ductile iron flanged gate valves with nominal pressure PN2.5~PN25 and nominal size DN50~DN2000, forming a complete technical framework from structural design, material selection, performance indicators to inspection rules, and setting a clear quality baseline for the industry.

1. Core Technical Upgrades of the New Standard: Quantified Performance Benchmarks for Gate Valves

Compared with the old version, GB/T 12232-2025 addresses long-standing industry pain points such as inconsistent design, vague acceptance criteria and insufficient engineering adaptability. It delivers multi-dimensional technical upgrades in structural mechanics, sealing performance, transmission reliability and engineering applicability, with key technical highlights as follows:

1.1 Graded Shell Wall Thickness Optimization & Stiffness Upgrade for Large-Size Valves

The standard specifies the minimum shell wall thickness for both gray cast iron and ductile iron materials, graded by nominal size and pressure class, with values ranging from 6mm to 46mm to balance structural strength and manufacturing cost. It also explicitly requires that gate valves with nominal size ≥ DN250 shall be equipped with stiffening ribs on the shell to improve overall rigidity and avoid harmful deformation during pressure tests and long-term operation, ensuring structural stability of large-size products from the design stage.

1.2 Standardized Gate Guide Structure to Reduce Operational Wear

The standard sets clear requirements for the mating structure of the gate and valve body: the gate shall be designed with guide grooves matching the valve body guides, ensuring that the symmetrical centerline of the gate sealing surface remains parallel to the stem axis throughout the opening and closing cycle, thus reducing eccentric wear of the sealing surfaces. It also specifies sealing surface processing requirements: the machined thickness of copper alloy surfacing shall be no less than 2mm, and inserted copper alloy seats shall be firmly bonded without leakage, effectively improving the wear resistance and sealing reliability of the sealing surfaces.

1.3 Quantified Seal Leakage Class for Unified Acceptance Criteria

For the first time, the new standard defines the seal leakage class of gate valve sealing pairs, requiring compliance with Class D as specified in GB/T 13927-2022, replacing the vague descriptions in the old version. The unified quantitative leakage index provides a clear basis for quality control on the production side, and also delivers consistent judgment criteria for on-site delivery and project acceptance, reducing standard discrepancies between suppliers and buyers.

1.4 Upgraded Stem & Packing System for Long-Term Operational Stability

Regarding stem transmission and sealing – a key failure point – the standard sets two critical constraints:
  • Quantified stem strength: Minimum stem diameters are specified by size and pressure class, ranging from 18mm to 110mm. The trapezoidal thread engagement length between the stem and stem nut shall be no less than 1.4 times the stem diameter, ensuring structural strength under transmission torque and reducing risks of stem fracture or thread slippage.
  • Standardized packing sealing: Molded packing is required, while open packing is prohibited. For O-ring sealing configurations, no fewer than 2 O-rings shall be used with an external dust seal. This improves the long-term reliability of stem sealing and reduces leakage risks from the packing structure.

1.5 Added Engineering Adaptation Clauses for Full Lifecycle Coverage

The standard supplements multiple technical requirements for on-site engineering: it clarifies that gate valves shall preferably be installed vertically; products with nominal size ≥ DN200 or weight ≥ 50kg shall be equipped with lifting lugs and foot mounts for on-site lifting, installation and fixation; for large-size valves above DN700, bypass valves and drain holes can be configured on demand to meet on-site operation and maintenance needs. In addition, hygiene requirements for drinking water applications are added: gate valves used in potable water systems shall comply with GB/T 17219, expanding the compliant application scenarios of iron gate valves.

2. Full-Process Alignment with the New Standard: Gaote’s Technical Implementation for Gate Valves

As a drafting unit of the standard, Gaote Holding has integrated all technical requirements of GB/T 12232-2025 into the whole process of product design, manufacturing and factory inspection, ensuring that every gate valve delivered meets all indicators of the new standard.

2.1 Pre-Compliance in Structural Design

All Gaote flanged iron gate valves adopt an integral casting process for the valve body and flange, with face-to-face dimensions strictly complying with the tolerance requirements of GB/T 12221, and the seat inner diameter consistent with the flow passage size to reduce medium flow resistance. For products of DN250 and above, shell rigidity is verified through finite element analysis (FEA) at the design stage, and stiffening rib structures are pre-configured to meet the standard’s constraints on shell deformation.

2.2 Process Control for Key Components

In the sealing surface processing stage, copper alloy surfacing is uniformly adopted, with the machined surfacing layer thickness strictly controlled at no less than 2mm. The guides and guide grooves are precision-machined to ensure fitting accuracy, allowing the gate to run smoothly without deflection during opening and closing, with uniform force on the sealing surfaces. Stems are machined from corresponding grade bar stock, with diameters strictly above the minimum values specified in the standard; trapezoidal thread machining accuracy complies with GB/T 5796, with sufficient engagement length reserved.

2.3 Adapted Selection for Sealing Systems

According to different working media and pressures, matched molded packing materials are selected, paired with metal packing glands. The packing gland adopts a perforated integral or split design, evenly compressed via T-bolts or eye bolts, avoiding stem jamming and sealing failure caused by gland deflection. For products intended for drinking water scenarios, compliant sealing and packing materials are used to meet hygiene performance requirements.

2.4 Closed-Loop Verification in Factory Inspection

A per-unit factory inspection mechanism is established: every gate valve completes four mandatory tests – shell wall thickness measurement, no-load opening/closing test, shell pressure test and sealing performance test – with seal leakage strictly controlled within Class D requirements. Type tests cover all indicators including stem diameter measurement, valve body material mechanical properties and hygiene performance, ensuring consistency and compliance of mass-produced products.

3. Wide Specification Range & Multi-Scenario Adaptation for Diverse Fluid Control Needs

Gaote flanged iron gate valves cover the full size range DN50~DN2000 and full pressure class PN2.5~PN25, available in both rising stem and non-rising stem designs with multiple material options (gray cast iron, ductile iron), widely adaptable to various fluid transmission scenarios:
  • Municipal water supply: Suitable for municipal main pipelines, secondary water supply pump houses and old pipeline renovation projects. Drinking water-grade products meet hygiene compliance requirements with stable sealing and convenient operation & maintenance.
  • Building & HVAC: Adaptable to building water supply/drainage and HVAC circulating water systems, with compact structure, easy installation and low operating noise.
  • General industrial applications: Suitable for plant circulating water and general medium transmission pipelines, with reliable shell strength and long service life.
  • Water conservancy & large-scale projects: Complete large-size specifications, equipped with lifting lugs, foot mounts and bypass structures, adaptable to key projects such as large-scale water transmission and water conservancy facilities.
